What we have going on…
NOTE: This field trip now has the Old Country Market’s management approval to photograph inside the market in addition to the open areas. The question was raised during the general meeting 5 October.
October’s trip is to the Old Country Market in Coombs (Goats on the Roof). Lunch to follow will be at The Cuckoo Restaurant which is on site.
To extend our educational program which John Critchley worked very hard to produce and deliver, apply some of those compositional techniques to the images created during the field trip. This is not a contest but an opportunity to explore and expand our photographic skills. These included but not limited to:
- Composing with colour
- Composing with light
- Uses of horizontal or vertical planes
- Uses of horizontal or vertical lines
- Leading Lines
- Use of negative space
- Diagonal rules
- Rule of Thirds or breaking the rule
- Simplicity
- Filling the Frame
- Use of a different perspective
Demonstrate these techniques by applying a different and single technique to each of the 6 images you submit from your field trip photos. Send a maximum of 6 photos to fieldtrip.opc@gmail.com. Keep in mind the club’s size limitation for each image.
Have fun and see you Sunday 16 October.

Shelter Point Distillery website
Shelter Point Distillery is, and always will be, an artisan distillery. Right from the start, the concept has been quality over quantity, coexisting with nature and sourcing locally. This local-first philosophy extends beyond just building materials. In fact, Shelter Point is one of only a handful of distilleries that grow their own barley and distill on the same site. Virtually the only things that aren’t local are our oak barrels, which were sourced from Kentucky bourbon distillers, and the massive copper pot stills which came from Scotland. As far as our methodology goes, well, when you wait five years for a whisky to mature, you can’t help but learn to be patient. As a result, nothing is particularly hurried here. We took our time to get the distillery right, and we’re doing the same with everything else.
Directions:
People who visit us say that the journey is almost as delightful as their stay with us, so please, won’t you stop in? We’re located just south of Campbell River off the “Oceanside Route” or the Old Island Highway that winds its way along the eastern side of Vancouver Island.

Impressive waterfalls cascade down a rocky gorge in a beautiful forested setting bordered by steep mountain peaks at this park, one of the most beautiful parks on central Vancouver Island. The falls, lake swimming, shaded riverside trails and picnic facilities make Little Qualicum Falls a very popular family recreation destination.
