Lions Gate Nature Competition – 2015
Sep 15 @ 12:00 am – Nov 3 @ 10:00 pm

Screen Shot 2015-08-24 at 12.53.50 PMIt’s that time of year and you’ll have to submit your best nature shot by November 3rd. The rules have changed slightly for this year, there are 8 images per club, one per photographer. Here is a link to the rules or click on the image.  The categories are:

  1. – Birds
  2. – Mammals
  3. – General (not 1 or 2)

Look through your shots and be certain there is no ‘hand of man’ in the image.  An assignment is set up in our member database.

Quick Note: I spoke with a fellow who has done a lot of judging for some comments.  He said that when he has several hundred shots to look at and it’s a limited time period, there really isn’t time to study the shots.  Within a second or two he has to make a decision so the image has to have impact, sharpness and clarity of purpose to get any extra consideration.

Lions Gate Camera Club of Vancouver, British Columbia

is pleased to invite photography clubs in British Columbia and The Yukon to enter our tenth annual competition.

Celebration of Nature Photography 2015

The theme for this annual competition is nature in all of its splendid diversity. Images must be free of any signs of man’s impact and must not include any domestic animals or cultivated plants.

All images submitted will be judged by renowned Canadian nature photographers who are completely independent of Lions Gate Camera Club.

This is a unique opportunity for the photography produced by your members to be judged by some of the best nature photographers in Canada.

Brant Exhibit at the MAC
Mar 5 @ 1:00 pm – Mar 28 @ 2:00 pm

jcshot11The McMillan Arts Centre is delighted to participate in the Brant Wildlife Festival by hosting an exhibition that includes our own John Critchley.

John’s show is all about local wildlife or wildlife that is accessible without traveling too far from home. The bear photos were taken in Bute Inlet which is within a day’s travel there and back from Campbell River. The bird photos are all from walking around the French Creek area and some as far away as Nanaimo River Estuary. Most involved multiple attempts/ visits to the area and some long hours waiting for the right shot to materialize.

John began playing with a camera fifty years ago but only really got serious about ten years ago. Since then he has been shooting at anything that moves and some things that don’t (landscape) but recently has started to focus more on wild life than any other genre. All of these exhibition photos have been taken within the last two years and all were taken on Vancouver Island except the bear shots. Some were taken in his back yard.

As with most amateur photographers, his desire is to take better pictures and in that regard the learning curve for technique and equipment is very steep. He still has a long way to go and many shots to track down, but despite the cost and the disappointment it remains a hobby that intrigues and excites him.

Please vist the opening on March 5 from 1:00 to 3:00

Adam Gibbs
May 16 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

We are pleased to have Adam Gibbs join us for a special meeting to talk about his photography and travels. Many of you will have seen hundreds of Adams photos in Gardens West magazine when he was their professional photographer.  Here is a link to Adam’s website
Adam enjoys photography, and especially the opportunity to experience the subjects. The act of hiking to a location and simply setting up a camera and taking a few images is what he enjoys about photography. To watch beautiful light on a snowbound peak or camp in an alpine meadow surrounded by wildflowers are the things that draw him to photography, not the other way around. For him, photography is an extension of the outdoor experience, nothing more, nothing less.

Be certain your membership is up to date for free admittance.
